Training

Moving Minds offers high quality, face to face training.  Training for the following professions is available:

Mental Health Professionals

Moving Minds' sister company, EMDR Extra, offers EMDR Europe accredited training in eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) to mental health professionals.  Dr Manda Holmshaw, Moving Minds’ Clinical Director, is one of only seven EMDR Europe accredited trainers working in the UK.  Many Moving Minds specialists have attended training sessions offered by EMDR Extra.

Employers / Health and Safety Officers / Employers' Liability Insurers

Trauma in the workplace, such as after critical incidents, can cause significant disruption, both at an individual and corporate level.  However, if the possibility of trauma is anticipated and planned for, its disruptive effects can be significantly minimised.

Moving Minds offers pre-incident trauma awareness training to managers and health and safety officers to teach “psychological first aid”.

High risk occupations may include:

  • Emergency service employees
  • Retail employees in commercial outlets such as shops
  • Security guards
  • Factory floors and assembly line workers
  • Public transport employees
  • Commercial drivers
  • Construction workers
  • Mining and extractive industry workers
  • After-dark retailers
A traumatic event can cause severe and lasting psychological ill health (in addition to physical harm).  However, management involved with the above occupations or activities can minimise the effect of trauma by providing appropriate training to staff.

Training enables those present at the scene of critical incidents to act appropriately and supportively to help protect against chronic psychological illness and litigation. This preparation enables managers to handle the human aspect of critical incidents encapsulated in the principles of "psychological first aid."

Personal Injury Insurers, Technical Claim Managers and Case Handlers

Moving Minds offers training to personal injury injurers, technical claim managers, and case handlers on:

  • Identifying psychological trauma
  • Recognising the influence of psychological illness on long-term psychological ill health and absence from work
  • Understanding medico-legal reports
  • Commissioning appropriate psychological treatments

Post-Incident Trauma Awareness Training

Even with a well trained workforce, a traumatic event can be very distressing.  Immediate debriefing or the rapid involvement of a counsellor (rather than a trauma-focused clinician) is now known to be ineffectual and potentially harmful.

What is needed after a critical incident is a well planned discussion of the traumatic event.  This assistance can be conducted on site.  Education and normalisation of symptoms can help people regain a sense of calm.  Some individuals may require face to face treatment.

Solicitors and Fee Owners

Personal injury lawyers are closely involved in the management of their clients’ psychological injuries. However, some of their clients’ psychological issues may be outside solicitors’ pre-existing skill base and experience.

Moving Minds offers training to solicitors and their colleagues to help them better understand psychological issues. In turn, this enables them to more thoroughly evaluate reports and to assess the appropriateness of treatment recommendations. Training also attracts CPD points.

Training can be offered to individuals or to groups at all levels, from case handlers to barristers. We will also soon be offering web-based seminars.

Specialist Training

Moving Minds also offers regular training days to specialists in topics related to the assessment and treatment of psychological disorders. Past topics have included treating chronic and phantom limb pain, neuropsychology, travel phobia and PTSD

Please contact the office for details of the next training day, or join our network to be notified automatically.
